10 Reasons You Might Want to Change Your Major

If you’re thinking of changing your major, you’re not the only one. About 80% of college students will change their major at least once, and the average college student will change his or her major three times in his or her academic career. There are plenty of reasons why you might want to change your major. Here are just a few.

  1. The major you picked originally requires a lot more math classes than you thought, and you’re not really into that.

  2. Your parents like your major a lot more than you do.
  3. You picked a random major just because you needed one, even though you kind of hate it.
  4. You didn’t realize that your school actually has ridiculously cool majors like Fashion Design and concentrations like Forensic Science and Cybersecurity.
  5. You came in undeclared and now you’re running out of gen ed classes to take.
  6. You picked a major so you could have the same classes as your crush, but you realized no crush is worth that.
  7. Someone told you that certain majors don’t have morning classes, but now you know they were just lying to you.
  8. You just declared the same major as your roommate because you didn’t know what else to do.
  9. You found out that your dream job doesn’t actually require a specific major, so you can study something interesting like Philosophy or Communication!
  10. You realized that it’s better to follow your talents and your interests than force yourself to stay in a major that’s not right for you.

You can come check out all the majors that Marymount has to offer by coming to Major Madness on Wednesday, October 21st at 3PM in the Lee Center. You’ll have a chance to chat with professors and upperclassmen in other majors, eat free food, take pictures with your friends in our photobooth, and win cool prizes!

The 10 Thoughts Everyone Has Before Fall Break

Fall Break is only hours away. The second you walk out of your last class on Friday, you know that you’re ready for 4 days of perfect class-free relaxation. Are we the only ones who have these 10 thoughts?

  1. Wait, Fall Break is THIS weekend?!
  2. What am I going to do with all this time? Go home? Sleep for 4 days straight?
  3. No, I’m going to be responsible. I’m going to write that paper over the break.
  4. Just kidding.
  5. It’s Fall Break. I’ll worry about homework when I get back.
  6. What’s everybody else doing?
  7. We could see a show. Or go hiking. Or take a walk on the National Mall to see the monuments at night.
  8. Or we could eat pizza and watch Hocus Pocus.
  9. Let’s be honest. I’ll have a great time if I can just sleep in and eat brunch.
  10. No matter what we decide to do, we get a break from classes and that’s a beautiful thing.

This Student Went To Another Country For Spring Break and Got Class Credit

The Global Classroom Series is comprised of several 3-credit spring semester classes that are taught at Marymount and include a week-long international field experience over spring break.

The Global Classroom series is a great way to study abroad without the time and financial commitment of a full semester abroad. I sat down with a student who traveled to London with his Global Classroom Series class. I’ll let him tell you why you need to apply for the Global Classroom Series today.

Name: Shawn Banks

Major: Fashion Merchandising

Year: Sophomore

You took a Global Classroom Series course last spring. Which course did you take and how was it different than other classes you have taken at Marymount?
I took AA-274 Fashion Industry and Its Promotion. The entire class was geared toward going to London, which was really helpful because the UK is one year ahead of us in fashion. I also learned a lot about going abroad. I didn’t even know how to get a passport until I took the class.

What did you and your class do while in London?
We did so many fun things. The main reason I wanted to go is that we got to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit. There’s a 6-month waiting list for tickets so we were really lucky to be able to visit. We did a lot in just 7 days — we went to multiple flagship stores, saw the Victorian Albert Wedding Dress Museum, and participated in a fascinators workshop at the London College of Fashion led by someone who makes hats for the Queen of England.

What was your favorite part about the class?
The trip was obviously great, but I really enjoyed the class itself. Our final project was to create a fashion show from scratch including stuff like press releases and getting sponsors. I got to apply a lot of what I learned on the London trip too.

Is the Global Classroom Series affordable?
Yes, the trip was only $1100, and my trip was paid for by a scholarship from the Center for Global Education. I applied for the scholarship the same time I applied for the class. I found out in November that I was accepted into the course, and a week later they told me that I got the scholarship. So, it was kind of like going to London for free!

We just had to pay for our lunches and dinners, plus anything we wanted to do for fun. The hotel served us breakfast every morning and we had unlimited access to ride the buses and metro (over there it’s called “the tube”).

Do you want to go abroad again (semester study abroad or for-credit global internship)?
Definitely. I would like to study in Paris. I think there was a Global Classroom Series course that went to Paris in the past. I hope they do it again so I can go.

What advice do you have for first-year students who are considering taking a Global Classroom Series course?
Definitely plan early. Not only do the spots fill up fast, but you also have to prepare. Don’t wait until the last minute to get your passport. Do your research. Try and learn a little bit about the culture before you go. And make the best of it. Go out at night. You’re only doing school stuff from 9-4 so you have the night to go out and explore.

How To Make the Most of Your Weekend

The weekend is almost here! But sometimes it’s hard to get excited about the weekend when you’re still adjusting to life in college. Maybe you haven’t found the right group of friends yet, or maybe you’re really missing Friday Night Football at home. It’s ok! There are plenty of things to do on and around campus to help you make the most of your weekend.

  1. Plan a movie night.
Gather up some of the other residents on your hall and watch a movie together in the lounge. Make some popcorn or have everyone chip in for a pizza.
